Talent Demand vs. Available Talent: The Dwindling Hospitality Talent Pool by Frank Speranza

We've all heard the expression - If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me...

Well that is what I feel like about two questions I get asked numerous times each and every day when I'm on the phone or in a meeting with clients & candidates. The two famous questions?

  • From Candidates - What is the Job Market Like?

  • From Clients - Why am I having such a hard time finding talent?

So when Hotel Business Review asked me to write an article on the subject I agreed without a moment's hesitation. I think I have some very good insight about this that I would like to share with the industry.

Allow me to warn you, many of you may not like what I have to say here either. However for those of you who know me or have worked with me, you know I'm not one to hold back and I tend to call things I see in life like an umpire calls balls & strikes behind the plate at a baseball game. While I'm not naïve enough to think that life is always black and white, I do feel there are certain issues that are and this is one of them that I feel rather strongly about.

In addition I wanted to share with you something I saw on CBS 60 Minutes that aired on February 19th. I did not see this segment until later and after I actually wrote this article however I thought it was a powerful report that is very well done and is entitled "Trapped In Unemployment". If you are an employer or an unemployed person I highly recommend that you watch this 12 minute video. It could make a huge difference for both employers and the unemployed if you are willing to be a little creative in your thought process. Below is the link to that video segment as well.

I hope you enjoy my insights on these two very popular questions and enjoy the 60 minute video segment as well. While I can't respond to all the comments I get on articles I publish, I do read them all so I'd be glad to hear what you have to say about the article and this video as well.

Best Wishes,
